Pathogen: Salmonella enterica
Description
Salmonella enterica is a gram-negative bacteria and one of two Salmonella species (enterica and bongori) of genus Salmonella, family Enterobacteriaceae. This pathogen can cause a wide range of clinical manifestations in infected animals; enteric disease is the most common, but acute septicaemia, abortion, arthritis, respiratory disease and also an asymptomatic carrier state may be seen.
Most cases of Salmonellosis are caused by infection of healthy cattle and poultry with S. enterica and the subsequent transmission to humans via contaminated food. Current diagnostic procedures are based on presence of Salmonella enterica by culture and biochemical identification that is a time-consuming test. PCR techniques have proven to be a rapid and effective method for identification of S. enterica. qPCR does not need of pre-enrichment step to detect Salmonella in diseased animals.
This assay detects the following serovars of salmonella enterica: Serovar Paratyphi A (CECT 4139), Serovar Paratyphi B (CECT 554), Serovar Serovar Typhimurium (CECT 723), Serovar Enteritidis (CECT 4396) and Serovar Typhi (CECT 4138)
