Pathogen: Yersinia ruckeri
Description
Yersinia ruckeri is a Gram-negative bacterium that occurs in freshwater and is a major pathogen of fish, particularly salmonids.
It is the causative agent of enteric redmouth disease, characterized by hemorrhages, exophthalmia and septicemia, often leading to significant mortality in aquaculture. The disease has an important economic impact due to losses in fish production and increased management costs.
Conventional detection methods based on culture may be time-consuming or affected by sample conditions. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of Y. ruckeri DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
