Pathogen: S. equi equi, S. equi zooepidemicus
Description
Streptococcus equi subsp. equi and Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus are Gram-positive bacteria that colonize the upper respiratory tract of horses. S. equi subsp. equi is the etiological agent of strangles, while S. zooepidemicus is commonly considered an opportunistic pathogen associated with respiratory and systemic infections.
Infections caused by S. equi subsp. equi are characterized by fever, nasal discharge and abscess formation in lymph nodes, leading to reduced performance and important economic impact. S. zooepidemicus may cause respiratory disease, septicemia and reproductive disorders, particularly under predisposing conditions.
Conventional detection methods based on culture may be time-consuming and may not reliably differentiate between closely related subspecies. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection and differentiation of these pathogens directly from clinical samples.
The assay includes a dual-target approach (eqbE and marker 2190) for S. equi subsp. equi, increasing specificity, while S. zooepidemicus is detected in a separate channel. The multiplex design allows simultaneous detection and differentiation in a single reaction, improving efficiency and enabling a more accurate interpretation of mixed or co-infections.
