Description

Equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) and Equine herpesvirus 4 (EHV-4) are enveloped double-stranded DNA viruses of the family Herpesviridae that are widely distributed in equine populations worldwide. Both viruses infect the respiratory tract, although EHV-1 is also associated with reproductive and neurological disease.
EHV-1 can cause respiratory infection, abortion, neonatal death and equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy, while EHV-4 is primarily associated with respiratory disease, particularly in young horses. These infections can result in significant health, welfare and economic impacts in breeding and performance horse populations.
Conventional detection methods such as virus isolation may be time-consuming and may not reliably differentiate between closely related herpesviruses. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of equine herpesvirus DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
This multiplex assay allows the simultaneous detection and differentiation of EHV-1 and EHV-4 in a single reaction, providing an efficient tool for investigating respiratory, reproductive and neurological disease associated with equine herpesvirus infections.
