Pathogen: Brachyspira hyodysetenteriae, Brachyspira pilosicoli
Description
Brachyspira hyodysenteriae and Brachyspira pilosicoli are anaerobic intestinal spirochetes affecting pigs and other animal species. B. hyodysenteriae is the primary causative agent of swine dysentery, while B. pilosicoli is associated with porcine intestinal spirochetosis.
These infections are characterized by diarrhea, reduced growth performance and, in severe cases, mucohemorrhagic colitis, leading to significant economic losses in swine production. Mixed or concurrent infections may occur and complicate clinical presentation.
Conventional detection based on culture and biochemical identification can be difficult and time-consuming, particularly when multiple Brachyspira species are present. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection and differentiation of B. hyodysenteriae and B. pilosicoli directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
