Description

Tritrichomonas foetus is a flagellated protozoan and the etiological agent of trichomoniasis, a venereal disease that causes significant negative economic impact in cattle due to embryonic losses and abortion. This agent may survive both freezing to -196°C and antibiotics used in semen extenders, so proper hygiene and extensive testing of donor bulls is imperative.

The infection is asymptomatic in bulls and most females will get infected after mating with an infected one. Embryonic deaths by resorption and/or mummification are the hallmarks of trichomoniasis; Tritrichomonas foetus also can cause prolonged infertility after abortion.
