Description

Treponema spp. are anaerobic spirochete bacteria commonly found in the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract and environment of animals. While many species are considered commensal, several Treponema species have been consistently associated with bovine digital dermatitis and other infectious hoof disorders in ruminants.
In particular, T. pedis, T. medium and T. phagedenis are recognized as key pathogens involved in digital dermatitis, a contagious disease characterized by painful ulcerative lesions, lameness and reduced productivity. Other species, including T. denticola and T. vincentii, have also been associated with pathological processes, often as part of polymicrobial infections.
Conventional detection based on culture is challenging due to the fastidious and anaerobic nature of these organisms. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of Treponema DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
This assay detects multiple Treponema species, including pathogenic species such as T. pedis, T. medium and T. phagedenis, as well as potentially pathogenic species including T. denticola and T. vincentii. The assay also detects other Treponema species commonly found in animal-associated microbial communities, providing broad coverage for the study of treponemal infections. This assay detects both pathogenic and non-pathogenic Treponema species; therefore, results should be interpreted in conjunction with clinical findings and other laboratory data.
