Description

Transmissible gastroenteritis (TGE) is an enteric disease of pigs caused by TGE virus (TGEV), member of the Coronaviridae. Although its occurrence has became more sporadic this disease is still reported occasionally in Europe, North America and Asia. Another coronavirus with respiratory tropism (PRCV) arose in the eighties and has spread throughout many parts of the world. Although both present genetic similarities, molecular techniques are capable to differentiate TGEV from PRCV. This point in addition to the ability of detecting very low quantities of virus makes the qPCR a suitable tool for the surveillance of this disease.
