Description

Taylorella equigenitalis is a fastidious Gram-negative bacterium of the family Alcaligenaceae that infects equids and colonizes the reproductive tract. It is the etiological agent of contagious equine metritis (CEM), a highly contagious venereal disease of horses.
In mares, infection may cause endometritis, temporary infertility and reduced reproductive performance, while stallions typically remain asymptomatic carriers and play an important role in disease transmission. Outbreaks can result in significant economic losses and restrictions on breeding and animal movement.
Conventional detection methods based on bacterial culture may be labor-intensive and affected by the fastidious growth requirements of the organism. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of T. equigenitalis DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
