Description

Swine poxvirus is a double-stranded DNA virus of the family Poxviridae that affects domestic pigs, particularly young animals.
It is the causative agent of swine pox, a disease characterized by cutaneous lesions such as papules, pustules and scabs, mainly observed on the skin of the abdomen and limbs. Although mortality is usually low, the infection can affect animal welfare and growth performance.
Conventional detection methods based on clinical observation or virus isolation may be limited by specificity or require specialized techniques. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of swine poxvirus DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
