Pathogen: Salmonella typhimurium
Description
Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium is a Gram-negative bacterium belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae, widely distributed in animal populations and the environment.
It is associated with enteric and systemic infections in a broad range of host species, causing diarrhea, septicemia and, in some cases, abortion. Infected animals may also act as asymptomatic carriers, contributing to transmission. This pathogen has significant economic impact and is an important zoonotic agent linked to foodborne disease.
Conventional detection methods based on culture are time-consuming and may require multiple steps for confirmation. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of S. Typhimurium DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
