Pathogen: Maedi Visna Virus / CAEV
Description
Small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLV) belong to the genus Lentivirus. Two of these viruses have been known for many years: maedi-visna virus (MVV), which mainly causes the diseases maedi and visna in sheep, and caprine arthritis encephalitis virus (CAEV), which primarily causes arthritis and encephalitis in goats.
Visna virus (maedi-visna virus) causes encephalitis and chronic pneumonitis. It is known as visna when found in the brain, and maedi when infecting the lungs. White blood cells of the monocyte/macrophage lineage are the main target of visna virus.
CAEV adversely affects the immune system causing a disease known as caprine arthritis encephalitis. Common symptoms resulting from CAEV infection include arthritis, pneumonia, indurative mastitis, and encephalitis.
