Description

Streptococcus iniae is a Gram-positive bacterium that infects a wide range of freshwater and marine fish species and is considered one of the most important bacterial pathogens in aquaculture worldwide.
Infection causes streptococcosis, a disease characterized by septicemia, meningoencephalitis, exophthalmia and abnormal swimming behavior, often leading to high mortality. Outbreaks can result in significant economic losses due to mortality, reduced growth and increased treatment costs.
Conventional detection methods based on bacterial culture may be time-consuming and can be affected by prior antimicrobial treatment or sample quality. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of S. iniae DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
This assay detects Streptococcus iniae DNA and can be used for the investigation and monitoring of streptococcosis in aquaculture systems.
