Description
Suid alphaherpesvirus 1 (SuAHV-1), also known as Aujeszky’s disease virus or pseudorabies virus (PRV), is an enveloped double-stranded DNA virus of the family Herpesviridae that primarily infects swine, its natural reservoir host.
The virus causes Aujeszky’s disease, a contagious infection characterized by respiratory, neurological and reproductive disorders. Clinical severity varies with age, with high mortality in piglets, respiratory disease in growing pigs and reproductive failure in breeding animals. The disease has a significant economic impact on swine production and remains an important target of surveillance and control programs.
Conventional detection methods such as virus isolation and serology may be time-consuming or limited during certain stages of infection. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of SuAHV-1 DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
