Pathogen: Staphylococcus haemolyticus
Description
Staphylococcus haemolyticus is a Gram-positive bacterium belonging to the group of coagulase-negative staphylococci, commonly found as part of the normal skin microbiota in animals. Under certain conditions, it can act as an opportunistic pathogen.
It is mainly associated with subclinical mastitis in ruminants, leading to reduced milk production and quality, and contributing to economic losses in livestock systems. Its pathogenicity is generally lower than that of S. aureus, but it can persist in herds.
Conventional microbiological methods may be time-consuming and sometimes inconclusive for species-level identification. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of S. haemolyticus DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
