Pathogen: Swine Delta Coronavirus
Description
Porcine Delta Coronavirus (PDCoV) causes a diarrhea very similar to those generated by PEDV and TGEV. Nevertheless, severity of this disease might be lower than the other porcine coronavirus. This virus damages the intestinal villi and the absorption capability is reduced causing a loose of fluids and dehydratation. In acute outbreaks the mortality could be variable and specially high in piglets younger than 2 weeks.
The first detection of this virus was in Hong Kong in 2009 but so far several outbreaks have been described in U.S., Canada, South Korea and China. qPCR is the most suitable technique for a sensitive detection which also specifically discriminate this virus from other coronavirus affecting swine.
