Description

Rickettsia spp. are obligate intracellular Gram-negative bacteria primarily transmitted by ticks, fleas and other arthropod vectors. These pathogens infect a wide range of domestic and wild animals and are widely distributed in different geographic regions.
Infections are often subclinical in animal hosts but may be associated with fever, lethargy, hematological alterations and systemic disease. Animals can play an important role as reservoirs or sentinels, contributing to the maintenance and circulation of these vector-borne pathogens.
Conventional methods such as serology may present cross-reactivity between species and cannot always detect active infection. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of Rickettsia DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
This assay detects multiple Rickettsia species, including R. conorii, R. rickettsii, R. felis, R. raoultii, R. aeschlimannii, R. japonica, R. mongolotimonae, R. tamurae, R. asiatica, R. bellii and related species reported in domestic animals, wildlife and arthropod vectors.
