Pathogen: Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Description
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common encapsulated Gram-negative bacteria that can cause disease both in animals and humans. It is considered an opportunistic pathogen which causes bovine mastitis, metritis, pneumonia, dermatitis and enteritis in cattle. It can also produce ovine fleece rot, mastitis, pneumonia and otitits media in sheep and respiratory infections and otitis in pigs. In horses P. aeruginosa causes genital tract infections, pneumonia and ulcerative keratitis.
Although conventional microbiological methods for identifing P. aeruginosa are realiable, they requires several days to complete. Real Time PCR offers a faster, sensitive, specific and equally reliable way for the detection of this opportunistic pathogen.
