Description

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) causes important economic losses in cattle farming and Border disease virus (BDV) in sheep/goat farming worldwide. BVDV is associated with various diseases of cattle including respiratory and gastrointestinal infections; but also reproductive problems such as infertility, abortion and still birth. BVDV infection in early gestation may produce persistently infected (PI) animals that are the main source of BVDV transmission. Detection and elimination of these PI animals is the main focus in most eradication and control programs for BVDV.

Identification of pestivirus infection is routinely based on immunological test, but recently, real time RT-PCR assays have provided a higher sensitivity and specificity for the routine diagnosis of Pestivirus.
