Description
Prototheca spp. are achlorophyllic algae widely distributed in the environment, particularly in water, soil and organic matter. They can act as opportunistic pathogens in animals, especially in dairy cattle.
Infection is mainly associated with bovine mastitis, often chronic and resistant to treatment, leading to reduced milk yield and quality and causing significant economic losses. Infections may persist in herds due to environmental contamination.
Conventional diagnostic methods based on culture can be slow and may require specialized identification techniques. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of Prototheca DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
