Description

Piroplasms are intraerythrocytic protozoan parasites mainly belonging to the genera Babesia and Theileria, transmitted by ticks and affecting a wide range of domestic and wild animals.
Infections may cause acute or chronic disease characterized by fever, anemia, jaundice and reduced performance, with variable severity depending on the species and host. These pathogens have an important clinical and economic impact in livestock and are also relevant in companion animals and wildlife.
Conventional detection methods such as microscopy and serology may lack sensitivity, especially in carrier animals or mixed infections. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of piroplasm DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
This assay detects a broad range of Theileria and Babesia species, including clinically relevant agents such as T. equi, T. annulata, T. parva, T. orientalis and T. ovis, as well as B. bovis, B. bigemina, B. caballi, B. canis, B. gibsoni, B. divergens and related species circulating in livestock, pets and wildlife.
