Description

Bovine Parainfluenza 3 virus belongs to the family Paramyxoviridae and does not usually produce a severe disease in cattle. Latest reports describe this disease as underestimated and endemic. Nevertheless, with other agents makes up the enzootic pneumonia complex which mostly affects calves and causes relevant financial losses.
PI3V infection is usually subclinical but predisposes to secondary bacterial infection and this might lead to clinical signs. Lung tissue or lavages are considered to be appropriate samples but cell culture isolation of this virus is often difficult due to the fragility of the virus. Timing of sampling is crucial to obtain consistent diagnostic results. qPCR allows determining quickly and specifically this agent even in very low titers, thus this technique might be proposed as a powerful tool capable to help in the diagnosis of this complex.
