Description

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is a single-stranded positive-sense RNA virus member of genus Alphacoronavirus within the family Coronaviridae. PEDV causes porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) which is a highly contagious enteric disease characterized by severe enteritis, vomiting and watery diarrhea in swine.
During the 1970s and 1990s, PEDV caused widespread epidemics in multiple swine-producing countries in Europe. However in the last decades PED outbreaks have been rare in Europe. Recently, a PEDV outbreaks were detected in the U.S.A. resulting in tremendous economic losses. A rapid and specific identification of PEDV and differentiation of other related-coronavirus (TGEV, PRCV) is a key factor for the control of this re-emerging disease.
