Pathogen: Porcine Circovirus Type 3
Description
Porcine circovirus (PCV) is a single-stranded circular DNA virus belonging to the family Circoviridae. Until recently, PCV2 was the only member of this genus known to be a swine pathogen and cause of significant economic losses to the swine industry worldwide. Recently, a novel specie PCV3 was detected in USA through metagenomic sequencing, in tissues of pigs with cardiac pathology; but also it was found in tissue of sows affected by porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome (PDNS), and reproductive failure. The new virus was also present in tissues from aborted fetuses. PCV3 has also been described in China and Italy, where researchers highlighted that this virus commonly circulates in swine populationa and may play a rol as an etiological agent in PDNS and reproductive failure.
