Description

Betanodavirus, also known as nervous necrosis virus (NNV) or viral nervous necrosis virus (VNNV), is a non-enveloped single-stranded RNA virus of the family Nodaviridae that infects a wide range of marine and freshwater fish species.
It is the causative agent of viral nervous necrosis (VNN), a highly contagious disease characterized by vacuolation and degeneration of nervous tissues, leading to abnormal swimming behavior, loss of equilibrium, anorexia and high mortality, particularly in larvae and juvenile fish. The disease represents a major threat to aquaculture worldwide due to its rapid spread and severe impact on production.
Conventional detection methods such as virus isolation may be labor-intensive and require specialized facilities. Real-time RT-PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of betanodavirus RNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
This assay detects Betanodavirus RNA and can be used for the investigation and monitoring of viral nervous necrosis in susceptible fish species.
