Description

Neospora caninum is an obligate, intracellular, coccidian parasite of the phylum Apicomplexa. Infection can cause the clinical disease neosporosis, which is one of the most common causes of bovine abortion. These abortions are cause of important economic losses to both the dairy and beef industries around the world. Neosporosis abortion also occurs in sheep, goats, although they may be less susceptible than cattle. Dogs has been identified as the definitive host and are capable of shedding oocysts in feces after eating tissues of infected animals.

Although serological tests have been widely used to identify N. caninum in infected animals, diagnosis of neosporosis was much improved by the development of PCR tests which allow a fast and highly sensitive identification of this parasite.
