Description

Myxoma virus belongs to the family Poxvirus and it is the etiological agent of a fulminant disease for European rabbits called myxomatosis. This disease describes typically swelling in face, head and genitals, mucoid cutaneous tumors and inmunodepresion. This virus is transmitted by the bite of fleas or mosquitoes and usually causes a fatal end of animals and serious economic losses.

The diagnosis of myxomatosis was used to be based on clinical presentation of typical symptoms and histology. qPCR has improved the diagnosis providing a faster and more sensitive tool.
