Description

Mycoplasma wenyonii (formerly Eperythrozoon wenyonii) is a haemotropic mycoplasma (haemoplasma) that can be found attached to red blood cells or free in the plasma of infected cattle. This haemoplasma has been recognized as causative agent of bovine infectious anaemia; but other clinical signs such, scrotal and hind limb oedema, pyrexia, infertility, swollen teats, and decreased milk production have also been described in infected animals.

Haemoplasmas are uncultivable agents, so traditional diagnosis has been based on blood smears that can be unspecific and difficult to interpret. Recent advances in the molecular biology of M. wenyonii have allow development of techniques such as the PCR, that is a more sensitive and specific tool for the identification of this agent.
