Pathogen: Mycoplasma ovis
Description
Mycoplasma ovis (formerly Eperythrozoon ovis) is a haemotropic mycoplasma (haemoplasmas) that parasitizes the surface of erythrocytes and plasma in small ruminants. This agent causes mild to severe haemolytic anaemia and mortality in young animals; whereas adults are usually chronically infected and show no clinical signs of the disease.
Haemoplasmas are uncultivable agents, so traditional diagnosis has been based on blood smears that can be unspecific and difficult to interpret due to the low level and transient parasitemia. Recent advances in the molecular biology of M. ovis have allow development of techniques such as the PCR, that is a more sensitive and specific tool for the detection of this agent.
