Description

Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium caprae are closely related members of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC), a group of slow-growing intracellular bacteria that infect a wide range of domestic and wild mammals.
These pathogens are the causative agents of animal tuberculosis, a chronic disease characterized by granulomatous lesions that mainly affect the respiratory system, although other organs may also be involved. Infection can lead to reduced productivity, trade restrictions and significant economic losses in livestock production systems.
Conventional detection methods such as culture and skin testing may be time-consuming or have limitations depending on the stage of infection. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of MTBC DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
This assay is designed for the simultaneous detection of M. bovis and M. caprae. It targets genomic regions shared by both species, enabling their detection without species differentiation.
