Description

Mesomycoplasma bovoculi (formerly Mycoplasma bovoculi) is a wall-less bacterium of the class Mollicutes commonly found on the ocular surface and upper respiratory tract of cattle. It has been frequently isolated from animals affected by infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), although it may also be present in healthy cattle.
The organism has been associated with conjunctivitis and corneal lesions and is considered a contributing factor in the multifactorial pathogenesis of IBK. Its interaction with other pathogens and environmental factors may influence disease severity and transmission within herds, potentially affecting animal welfare and productivity.
Conventional identification based on culture is challenging due to the fastidious growth requirements of mycoplasmas. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of M. bovoculi DNA directly from ocular samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
