Pathogen: Mycoplasmopsis synoviae
Description
Avian mycoplasmosis can be caused by several species of mycoplasmas; however, M. gallisepticum (MG) and M. synoviae (MS) are considered the most important pathogens for poultry industry. MG causes chronic respiratory disease characterized by rhinitis, sinusitis and conjunctivitis. MS may cause respiratory disease, synovitis, bursitis or may result in a silent infection. Infection control for MG and MS is essential to prevent loss of productivity due to decreased eggs production, decreased feed efficiency and high condemnations rates of carcasses.
Microbiological culture is still considered the “gold standard” test. However mycoplasmas are slow growing relatively fastidious organisms. Recently, real-time PCR assay showed to be a faster and easier diagnostic tool, even for the simultaneous detection of both agents in a single assay (Multiplex qPCR), reducing labor, time and costs for a complete analysis.
