Description

Moraxella bovis is a Gram-negative bacterium considered the primary etiological agent of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), a contagious ocular disease in cattle. It colonizes the conjunctival and corneal surfaces and can be transmitted between animals, often facilitated by environmental factors and vectors such as flies.
Infection is characterized by conjunctivitis, lacrimation, corneal ulceration and, in severe cases, temporary blindness. IBK has a significant impact on animal welfare and productivity due to reduced weight gain and performance.
Conventional identification based on culture may be slow and sometimes inconclusive. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of M. bovis DNA directly from ocular samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
