Description

Mycoplasma putrefaciens is a small wall-less bacterium of the class Mollicutes that infects small ruminants, particularly goats, and is characterized by fastidious growth requirements.
It is associated with contagious agalactia syndrome, contributing to mastitis, arthritis and reduced milk production, leading to economic losses in affected herds. Infection may persist chronically and spread within flocks.
Conventional identification based on culture is difficult and time-consuming, and serological methods may lack specificity. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of M. putrefaciens DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
