Description

Mycoplasma spp. are wall-less bacteria of the class Mollicutes that colonize the respiratory, urogenital and mucosal surfaces of a wide range of animal species. In companion animals, several species have been associated with respiratory and reproductive disorders, either as primary pathogens or as contributors to multifactorial infectious processes.
In dogs and cats, mycoplasma infections have been linked to respiratory signs such as coughing, nasal discharge and conjunctivitis, as well as reproductive disorders including infertility and reproductive tract infections. Their clinical significance is often increased in the presence of co-infections with other pathogens.
Conventional identification based on culture is challenging due to the fastidious growth requirements of these organisms. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of Mycoplasma DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
This assay is optimized for the detection of Mycoplasmopsis canis, Mycoplasmopsis cynos, Mycoplasmopsis edwardii and Mycoplasmopsis felis, and also detects closely related species including Mycoplasma corogypsi and Mycoplasmopsis bovirhinis.
