Description
Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae is a wall-less cell of small size (0.2 to 0.3 μm) and a small genome (0.8 to 1.2 Mb). It is a facultative anaerobic germ and requires long time growth and complex biochemical identification. This bacterium belongs to the class Mollicutes and has been identified as the etiological agent of atypical pneumonia, a respiratory disease of small ruminants in first stages of their life. The presence of this mycoplasma is suspected to be often underestimated due to the difficulties in its growth and later biochemical identification. qPCR might appear as high sensitive and specific technique which allows veterinarians to assess the actual role of this microorganism in small ruminant pneumonias.
