Pathogen: Mycoplasma mycoides cluster
Description
Mycoplasma mycoides cluster (MMC) is a group of 6 genetically related mycoplasma species, including: Mycoplasma leachii, M. mycoides subsp. mycoides SC, M. mycoides subsp. capri (including M. mycoides subsp. mycoides LC), M. capricolum subsp. capricolum and M. capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae. MMC affects cattle and small ruminants causing processes such as contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), arthritis, keratoconjunctivitis or contagious agalaxia. Culture, biochemical and serological tests have been traditionally used to identify these agents, nevertheless, some limitations about sensitivity, specificity and time consumption are found in these techniques. Recenlty, qPCR assay is presented as a validated solution for a rapid and robust diagnosis of MMC.
