Description

Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capricolum is a wall-less bacterium of the class Mollicutes that infects small ruminants, particularly goats, and is characterized by fastidious growth requirements.
It is associated with contagious agalactia and other systemic infections, including mastitis, arthritis and septicemia, leading to reduced milk production and economic losses in affected herds. Infection may persist and spread within flocks, especially under intensive conditions.
Conventional identification based on culture is difficult and time-consuming, and serological methods may lack specificity due to cross-reactions within related mycoplasma species. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of M. capricolum subsp. capricolum DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
