Description

Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae belongs to the class Mollicutes and has been identified as the etiological agent of Porcine Enzootic Pneumonia. This agent affects mostly to growing and finishing pigs resulting in economic losses. M. hyopneumoniae is implicated in the pathogenesis of porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC), a disease involving both bacterial and viral (PRRS, PCV2, ADV and porcine respiratory coronavirus) pathogens.

The ‘gold standard’ technique used to diagnose M. hyopneumoniae infection, bacteriological culture, is laborious and is seldom used routinely. Serological tests (ELISA) and polymerase chain reaction detection methods, are techniques most frequently used to investigate the potential involvement of this pathogen in porcine respiratory disease.
