Description
Mycoplasma haemofelis is a haemotropic, wall-less bacterium of the class Mollicutes that parasitizes the surface of erythrocytes in cats. It is considered the most pathogenic feline haemoplasma and is distributed worldwide.
Infection may cause feline infectious anemia, characterized by lethargy, fever, weight loss, pale mucous membranes and regenerative hemolytic anemia. Clinical severity can vary from subclinical infection to severe disease, particularly in immunocompromised animals or in the presence of concurrent infections.
Conventional detection based on blood smear examination has limited sensitivity, especially in animals with low parasitemia or chronic infections. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of M. haemofelis DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
