Description

Leptospira is a genus of spirochete bacteria that includes both pathogenic and saprophytic species. Pathogenic Leptospira are the causative agents of leptospirosis, a globally distributed disease affecting a wide range of domestic and wild animals. These motile bacteria can survive in moist environments, particularly in water and soil, facilitating transmission between hosts.
In animals, leptospirosis is commonly associated with reproductive disorders such as abortion, stillbirths, neonatal mortality and infertility, and may also cause renal, hepatic and hemorrhagic disease. Infection can result in significant economic losses in livestock production, while carrier animals contribute to environmental contamination through urinary shedding.
Conventional detection methods such as serology and culture may be limited by cross-reactivity, low sensitivity during early infection or prolonged turnaround times. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of pathogenic Leptospira DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
This assay detects multiple pathogenic Leptospira species, including L. interrogans, L. kirschneri, L. borgpetersenii, L. noguchii, L. alexanderi, L. weilii, L. santarosai, L. kmetyi and L. mayottensis, covering species associated with clinically relevant infections in domestic animals and wildlife.
