Description

Leishmania spp. are intracellular protozoan parasites transmitted by phlebotomine sandflies, infecting macrophages of a wide range of mammalian hosts. They are the causative agents of leishmaniasis, a vector-borne disease with cutaneous, mucocutaneous or visceral presentations.
In animals, infection may be subclinical or lead to chronic systemic disease characterized by skin lesions, lymphadenopathy, weight loss and organ involvement. It has important clinical impact in endemic regions and significant zoonotic relevance, particularly for visceral leishmaniasis.
Conventional methods such as microscopy or serology may lack sensitivity or fail to detect early infections. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of Leishmania DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
This assay is designed to detect species within the Leishmania donovani complex and related species, including L. infantum, L. donovani, L. major, L. tropica, L. mexicana, L. amazonensis, L. braziliensis, L. killicki, L. pifanoi, L. garnhami and L. tarentolae.
