Pathogen: Cystoisospora suis
Description
Cystoisospora suis (formerly Isospora suis) is an intestinal protozoan parasite that infects pigs, mainly during the neonatal period.
It is the causative agent of porcine coccidiosis, characterized by non-hemorrhagic diarrhea, dehydration and reduced growth performance in piglets, leading to production losses in affected herds.
Conventional detection methods such as microscopy may lack sensitivity and require experienced interpretation. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of C. suis DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
