Description

Influenza A viruses (family Orthomyxoviridae) are important pathogens with a very broad host spectrum including domestic poultry and swine. These viruses are further characterised by subtype by the two major surface glycoproteins, haemagglutinin and neuraminidase. In pigs, swine influenza is an economically important disease that occurs within a herd either as an epizootic or enzootic disease. Economic impact is related to retarded weight gain resulting in increased number of days to reach the market weight. The most common subtypes of influenza virus in swine are H1N1, H1N2, and H3N2. However, despite the same subtype classification, swine influenza viruses in Europe and USA are genetically distinct.
Currently, several real time PCR methods are described for identification of Influenza A virus. Common screening real-time RT-PCR assays are directed against the relatively conserved Matrix protein of this virus.
