Description

Infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) is an enveloped single-stranded RNA virus of the family Rhabdoviridae that infects salmonid fish in freshwater and marine environments.
It is the causative agent of infectious hematopoietic necrosis, a highly contagious disease particularly affecting young fish, characterized by anemia, hemorrhages and high mortality. The infection can lead to severe losses in aquaculture due to rapid spread and high susceptibility of early life stages.
Conventional detection methods such as virus isolation may be time-consuming and require specialized facilities. Real-time RT-PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of IHNV RNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
