Description

Histophilus somni (Haemophilus somnus, Histophilus ovis) is a pathogen responsible for substantial economic losses in cattle and sheep industries. H. somni can be an opportunistic pathogen of cattle, predominantly causing respiratory infections, but occasionally septicaemia, myocarditis, arthritis, abortion and other systemic infections. In sheep it is associated to mastitis, septicemia and reproductive disorders.

The relative difficulty to isolate H. somni have focused the attention on real time PCR as improved diagnosis tool for the identification of this pathogen.
