EXOone Glaesserella parasuis

Description

Glaesserella parasuis is the etiological agent of Glasser disease, described worldwide representing an airborne emerging swine pathogen. Its wide antigenic variability is reported defining 15 serotypes so far. Moreover, although the typical occurrence is the polyserositis, other processes such as pneumonia, septicemia, meningitis and arthritis are also described. Many animals are considered as carriers in which the only presence of the bacteria in their nostril does not mean the occurrence of the disease. Nevertheless, findings in lung might follow primarily or secondarily to clinical disease.
Due the complex requirements for its maintenance and growth, the microbiological isolation is often difficult. Thus, the real incidence is suspected to be much higher than reported to date. A sensitive and easy tool like qPCR could open new horizons in the detection of this microorganism.
