Description

Helicobacter spp. are Gram-negative, spiral-shaped bacteria that colonize the gastrointestinal tract of a wide range of animal species. Several species, including H. pylori, H. heilmannii, H. felis, H. bizzozeronii and H. salomonis, have been associated with gastric colonization in companion animals and other mammals.
Infection may be asymptomatic or associated with gastritis, vomiting, reduced appetite and chronic gastrointestinal disorders. However, the pathogenic role of some Helicobacter species remains unclear, and colonization does not always correlate with clinical disease.
Conventional detection methods based on culture, histopathology or cytology may be labor-intensive and require specialized expertise. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of Helicobacter DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
