Pathogen: Mycoplasma haemominutum
Description
Mycoplasma haemominutum is a haemotropic, wall-less bacterium of the class Mollicutes that parasitizes the surface of erythrocytes, primarily in cats.
Infection is often subclinical but may contribute to anemia, lethargy and reduced condition, particularly in immunocompromised animals or in co-infections. It is frequently detected in carrier animals, playing a role in persistence within populations.
Conventional detection based on blood smear examination has limited sensitivity, especially in low parasitemia. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of M. haemominutum DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
