Description

Giardia intestinalis is a flagellated protozoan parasite that infects the small intestine of a wide range of animals, including livestock and companion animals. It is transmitted via the fecal–oral route through ingestion of contaminated water, food or surfaces.
Infection leads to giardiasis, characterized by diarrhea, malabsorption and poor growth, particularly in young animals. It may also be subclinical, contributing to environmental contamination and potential zoonotic transmission.
Conventional detection methods such as microscopy or antigen tests may lack sensitivity or require repeated sampling. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of G. intestinalis DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
